Jim Broadbent leads a rousing vintage heist comedy on art vs. socialism.

In early 60s Newcastle, 57-year-old working-class revolutionary Kempton Bunton is already struggling to make his voice heard among his indifferent neighbours and bemused wife when the crown jails him for not having a TV license -just as the National Gallery buys Goya’s painting of the Duke of Wellington for over 15,000 times his weekly income. Enraged by the south’s disproportionate wealth and self-indulgence, he takes revenge by stealing the painting, holding it ransom in return for more benefits for the elderly -causing massive upheavals for both his country and family. In his last film before his death, Roger Michell (Notting Hill, Le Week-End) channels Ealing for a gently subversive, expertly-crafted triumph for the underdog, with sharp, winning performances from Broadbent and Helen Mirren.
