Based on the manga by Masamune Shirow, Mamoru Oshii’s 1995 adaptation of Ghost in The Shell has gone on to become one of the most important and iconic anime films of all time.
Set in a dystopian future, we follow Major Kusanagi, a cyborg police officer, as she hunts a criminal known as ‘The Puppet Master’, who is able to control people by hacking into their cybernetically enhanced brains.
The film heavily influenced The Matrix both aesthetically and thematically, and drew praise from James Cameron for its profound exploration of a future that has only become less far-fetched since the film's release. Peppered between the story’s philosophical musings are brilliantly animated action sequences, striking character designs, and a haunting score from prolific composer Kenji Kawai, making it a must-see on the big screen.
