Three years ago, Godzilla Minus One shattered expectations in the west by bringing the iconic monster back to his roots in post-war Japan. Now, writer-director Takashi Yamazaki returns for a sequel that's being equally lauded.

Two years after Minus One, The Shikishima Family and their allies have moved past the trauma of the war and their near-fatal encounter with the irradiated creature. But when the appearance of a new, monstrous threat appears, they realise their only hope for survival lies in the dangerous task of attempting to control a revived Godzilla.

Godzilla Minus One received an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, but its larger success was due to its focus on a compassionate human story, much like the original 1954 film. Despite the promise of a kaiju brawl, Godzilla Minus Zero continues to hone in on this, bringing back the same lovable cast, and continuing to explore themes of guilt, nuclear anxiety, and the effects of the war from the view of Japanese citizens. Godzilla Minus Zero is a marriage of emotional storytelling and jaw-dropping spectacle - in other words, it's a Godzilla film done right (again).
