Plot details for Companion remain a highly guarded secret; its trailers revealing only that Josh (Jack Quaid) is romantically involved with a highly sophisticated android, Iris (Sophie Thatcher), who grows increasingly displeased with his apparent control over her. The film is the directorial debut of Drew Hancock, who also writes the screenplay, but it’s the backing of Zach Cregger, who directed 2022’s unpredictably twisty Barbarian, that might encourage you to take note.

With a genre-bending approach (including elements of romantic comedy, science fiction, horror and more), Companion’s Iris is set to make M3GAN look comparably pleasant and peaceable. As with Barbarian, expect seat-clenching twists, ever-rising suspense, and blood and guts galore. If you’re not yet afraid of the robots taking over, this might change your tune!
