Kiki’s Delivery Service is a joyous, heartwarming, and masterfully animated coming of age story, and one of Hayao Miyazaki’s finest films.
This iconic Studio Ghibli film follows the titular Kiki, a young witch who sets off to a coastal town to start a delivery service with her flying broomstick and her talking cat Jiji. As the townsfolk widen Kiki’s understanding of the world, she begins to grow anxious about her own abilities.
Like many of Miyazaki’s films, it’s a nuanced but tranquil depiction of the bridge between childhood and adolescence, yet it’s also full of fun, whimsy, and charm, all exemplified by Kiki herself. It’s also a stunning visual achievement, and well worth seeing on the big screen.
