On the last Monday of each month, you’ll find a handpicked musical from past decades.

For our new strand's third outing, creative genius Gene Kelly directs the incomparable Barbra Streisand as the bold and enchanting widow Dolly Levi - a socialite-turned-matchmaker in 1890s New York City.

Dolly’s latest clients seeking assistance are the cantankerous "half-a-millionaire" Horace Vandergelder (Walter Matthau) and a young artist named Ambrose (Tommy Tune), who is in love with Horace's niece, Ermengarde (Joyce Ames). Dolly's scheming soon involves Horace's employees as well as a New York hatmaker, as she tries to cover up her own secret romantic designs.

It’s hard to understate just how popular the original stage-version of this musical was in the early ‘60s, but here’s one example: Louis Armstrong’s recording of the title track pushed The Beatles off of the top of the Billboard Hot 100 at the height of Beatlemania. Well hello, Dolly.
