Jack Lowden and Peter Capaldi bring the haunted WWI survivor poet to life in Terence Davies’s small-but-shattering biopic.

One of the most famous chroniclers of trench warfare, Siegfried Sassoon stood out by surviving it, only to lead a torturous post-war life. Unhappy in both frustrated affairs with men and a subsequent marriage, he remains haunted by a war he feels he has never spoken against loudly enough, finding respite only in paper and, ultimately, Catholic spirituality. A skilled handler of imposing literary greats, Davies (The House of Mirth, A Quiet Passion) eschews historical sweep and ostentation for a quiet, intimate character study. He achieves a piercing expression of conflict’s damage, and the struggle to live after it, through the subtle, empathetic, and perfectly coordinated performances of Lowden and Capaldi as the poet’s young and old selves.
