Kenneth Branagh returns with a melodious hymn to the time and place that made him.

In the last summer of the 1960s, 9-year-old Buddy lives with his family at the height of the Troubles, which engulf the family when Unionist fighters demand money and loyalty in their attacks on local Catholics. Amidst this, debt, and drudgery, Buddy enjoys a childhood full of adventures, romance, and glimpses of the wider world through the TV and cinema - but as the family struggle over whether to uproot themselves, the real world closes in. Far from a sober memorial to history, Branagh’s film recaptures and celebrates the triumph of small joys - no matter how temporary - in an unlikely time and place, accomplished through a sharp cast (led by Judi Dench), luminous black-and-white cinematography, and a classic Van Morrison soundtrack.
