Guillermo del Toro brings his baroque imagination to the classic novel - a smoky, sordid panorama of fake psychics in 40s America.

Wanting an escape from the emptiness of the Midwest, Stan Carlisle (Cooper) joins a grimy carnival and learns the tricks used by clairvoyants, before employing them to seduce New York high society. After she fails to debunk him, psychiatrist Lilith Ritter (Blanchett) offers to join Stan in the scam with her own records, but their clients, and the couple’s own unscrupulous demons, plunge them into greater danger. Avoiding the lavish fantasy that won him awards, del Toro still keeps to horror of a very human kind: the grand guignol atmospherics and noirish period detail don’t interrupt a grim story of desperate, unstable people. Del Toro’s skill, and sympathetic lead performances, keep it riveting.
