Paul Thomas Anderson turns his camera to the early-70s California he grew up in for a sweet, mercurial comedy.

Not content with being an in-demand child actor and aspiring entrepreneur, high-schooler Gary Valentine strikes up a rapport with struggling 25-year-old Alana Kane, roping her into his ramshackle business ventures (waterbeds are supposed to be taking off) while she looks for something more valuable. Gary musters all the charm and confidence he has to win her over while she only sees him as a child, and the two drift in and out of love against a landscape of vivid distractions, including an oil crisis and an unhinged future Batman producer. As usual, Anderson (Magnolia, Phantom Thread) creates a striking and detailed cinematic world filled with hilarious human characters, never ignoring the awkward, absorbing romance at its centre.
