Oscar Isaac leads another gripping Paul Schrader vision of male solitude and instability, this time at the casino.

He plays William Tell, a gambler with a dubious history in military prisons, who now leads a monkish life, making small profits at the card table and leaving no personal traces. The balance is disrupted by two figures: La Linda (Tiffany Haddish), who offers greater success and personal connection, and Cirk (Tye Sheridan), a young man with a similarly troubled past. The latter intends to lead him on a personal revenge mission, while Tell tries to show him the light through poker, but a reckoning soon becomes inevitable. As with Taxi Driver and American Gigolo, Schrader combines smooth neo-noir style with a contemplative, absorbing focus on not-quite-broken people, all grounded with thoroughly convincing performances.
