Part of our new ‘Reflections of Asia’ bi-monthly strand.

Every other month, we’ll select one East Asian title to be seen on the big screen.

For December we bring you Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s Drive My Car

It was recently selected as the Japanese entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 94th Oscars.

Inspired by the short story of the same name by Haruki Murakami.

That title, like Murakami’s Norwegian Wood, is designed to tease us with the shiny wistfulness of a Beatles lyric.

Two years after Yusuke Kafuku

(Hidetoshi Nishijima) experiences an unexpected loss, a renowned stage actor and director, receives an offer to direct a production of Uncle Vanya at a theatre festival in Hiroshima. There, he meets Misaki Watari (Toko Miura), a taciturn young woman assigned by the festival to chauffeur him in his beloved red Saab 900.

It is an engrossing and exalting experience.

The film will be introduced by Dr Paul Sutton, who will stay for the end of the film for a post-screening discussion in the front-tier of the downstairs seating area.
