A department store Santa goes on trial to prove he is in fact the genuine article.
Six-year-old Susan Walker (Mara Wilson) is sceptical of the Christmas myth surrounding Santa Claus, a trait she perhaps learned from her mother, Dorey (Elizabeth Perkins). When tasked with hiring the Santa who will pose with kids at Macy's, Dorey enlists a man with the curious name of Kris Kringle (Richard Attenborough) who claims to be Santa himself. His assertions are met with scoffs and threats of being institutionalised, but a young lawyer, along with Susan and Dorey, comes to his defence.
Richard Attenborough positively sparkles in the role of the mysterious Kris Kringle, giving a restrained and genuinely sweet performance.
This remake comes from producer John Hughes and director Les Mayfield, following the original 1947 film fairly closely, but with a quieter, more elegiac tone.
This uplifting and joyous film will make believers out of the entire family.
