Drawing on her own experiences of caring for her younger brother, Director Sally Potter brings together the ever-excellent Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men, Skyfall) and Elle Fanning (Super 8, Trumbo) to tell an incredibly moving story of unconditional love in the hardest of situations, parallel lives and one simple question: “What if?”.

The film follows a day in the life of Leo (Bardem), a man suffering from early-onset dementia and cared for by his visiting daughter Molly (Fanning). Whilst Molly wrestles with both her father’s condition and her own future, Leo is on a hallucinatory journey through two alternative lives he could have led – a romance that never was with his childhood sweetheart Dolores (Salma Hayek), and a life spent pondering an unfinished novel alone on an idyllic Greek island. All the while, Molly tries to reach into the depths of her father’s soul, attempting to discover what lies behind his almost-vacant exterior.

Thoughtful and intensely personal, The Roads Not Taken is a reminder of the lives we all could have lived, as well as of those who join us on the paths we choose to walk.
