Christmas candy confection rarely comes sweeter than Richard Curtis’ festive chocolate box assortment, collectively known as Love Actually.
In these ten (occasionally) interlocking stories that make up this warm hug of a film we get to see many different forms of love, be it workplace romances (Martin Freeman and Joanna Page), the love of a parent for their child (Liam Neeson and Thomas Brodie-Sangster), holiday romances (Colin Firth and Lucia Moniz) or merely old friendships (Bill Nighy and Gregor Fisher). Set in a London so beautifully shot that it’s a character in its own right, Curtis’ directorial debut plays out over the five-week run-up to Christmas. However, like all the best desserts, a little bit of sharpness is needed to balance out the sweet. So in between the fuzzy moments, we see some genuinely heartbreaking scenes, which all add to the richness of the pudding. A modern-day Christmas staple.
