Frank Darabont’s adaptation of Stephen King was, and still is adored by audiences and critics alike. The uplifting and deeply moving prison drama struggled in the box office to begin with, competing with Pulp Fiction and Forrest Gump, then having to do the same at the Academy Awards, being nominated in seven categories but winning none.

The film takes place in Shawshank State Prison in Maine, where Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) has just been sent after being convicted and sentenced to a life term for a double murder, though he stubbornly proclaims his innocence. Fellow lifer, Red (Morgan Freeman) picks Andy as the most likely new recruit to crack under the harsh realities of prison life, of which he is quickly introduced to. Corrupt wardens, sadistic guards, and inmates who will willingly use beating to insure their dominance. Shockingly to Red, Andy does not crack, his intelligence and dignity help him to prevail behind bars.

Robbins and Freeman are outstanding in their roles as some of the most endearing characters in cinema history, and Darabont creates a world inside the prison that you can’t help but dive straight into, something he did again five years later with The Green Mile.

Simply marvellous entertainment.
