Robert Macfarlane’s seminal ode to subterranean landscapes gets adapted into an equally vivid and revelatory documentary.
Seeking to reveal the diverse worlds beneath the ground, the film concentrates on three people charting them around the globe: “urban explorer” Bradley Garrett in the inhabited rain tunnels of Las Vegas, while archaeologist Fátima Tec Pool traces her roots in the Mayan caves of Yucatán.
From an underground Canadian laboratory, physicist Mariangela Lisanti unravels the dark matter that underpins the visible universe; all demonstrate how great depths of the universe remain undiscovered, even with a wider focus than the book. With Macfarlane’s collaboration and Darren Aronofsky producing, director Rob Petit creates an extraordinary array of imagery (both shot and animated) to bring these depths to life, while Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall, Toni Erdmann) narrates the text’s sonorous words alongside it.
