Peter Bogdanovich was one of the most influential filmmakers of the New Hollywood movement. Starting his career as a film programmer and critic, he soon gained significant influence in the 1960s New York film scene, and decided to become a director. Following the success of his debut Targets, Bogdanovich co-wrote and directed The Last Picture Show, a genre-defining coming of age drama.
Acclaimed for its performances and tackling of nostalgia and small-town stagnation, the film was nominated for eight Academy Awards, winning Best Supporting Actor (Ben Johnson) and Best Supporting Actress (Ellen Burstyn).
