This Scottish drama, based on a novel by John MacKay, is set in the wild, craggy cliffs of the Outer Hebrides islands at the beginning of World War I.

Kirsty Mcleod, a young woman, coming of age in a small island community on the Isle of Lewis dreams of the wider world and a life away from the harsh land and strict religion of her island home.

Tragedy strikes twice, once at a village party, and again, when her boyfriend is sent to war.

It is hard to not instantly feel like you’ve received a warm hug as the film begins, the stunning coastline shots by Petra Korner encapsulate the beauty and isolation of the island, and are accompanied by Carlos José Alvarez’s atmospheric score. Alvarez captures the Scottish atmosphere perfectly, interweaving traditional songs with new melodies.

Inspired by a true story, the film offers a believable window into the rhythms of Hebridean island life at the turn of the twentieth century.
