‘Why should a woman have to earn her place in the world by looking a particular way?’

In 1970, the Miss World beauty pageant drew audiences of over 25 million UK viewers. Jennifer Hosten (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), is the first contestant ever from Grenada being one of only two black contestants in fifty-eight in an event already surrounded by controversy. A group from the Women’s Liberation movement led by Sally Alexander and Jo Robinson (Keira Knightly and Jessie Buckley) band together, frustrated in this time of structured sexism in the media. This group of passionate individuals birth a plan to disrupt the most public beauty pageant in the world. Cuttingly brutal and in the same way comedic, Greg Kinnear as Bob Hope is a delight to despise, the opposition to the feminist view as we see behind the scenes of the pageant.

With a killer soundtrack featuring Joni Mitchell, Carole King and Joan Armatrading, Philippa Lowthorpe (Call The Midwife) directs the cast of fiery females with a delightfully beautiful edge. Chemistry and sorority shines through in this story of triumph.
