Already being touted as ‘the next Hitchcock’, Jordan Peele (Get Out) is clearly developing a name for himself in the horror genre as a talented auteur with this sophomore film.

Us is an initially sun-soaked psychological-horror where husband and wife Gabe and Adelaide Wilson (Winston Duke and Lupita Nyong’o – Black Panther) return with their two children to their family’s beachfront home. Adelaide struggles with traumatic memories of an event from her past growing up in that same home, and becomes increasingly anxious that something bad will happen to her family. One night, four masked strangers turn up at the house and the situation descends into a cat-and-mouse game for survival. Underneath the masks, the strangers are revealed to be doppelgängers of the family members themselves.

Seen as a more accessible horror-comedy than its forerunner, Peele’s film is a 21st Century take on Gothic Horror tropes of the Uncanny, Us vs. Them oppositions, and a spine-chilling musing on wealthy middle-class African-American apathy and private guilt, shame and impostor syndrome.

This screening will include a short introduction on socio-political horror in the Trump Era by horror film scholar Dr Darren Elliott-Smith (University of Hertfordshire).
