Visionary filmmaker Jennifer Kent makes her long-awaited return after 2014’s ground-breaking The Babadook with this historical revenge thriller.
In 1825, a 21-year-old convict Clare (Aisling Francoisi) has served her 7-year sentence and is desperate to free herself from her controlling master, Lieutenant Hawkins (Sam Clafin) who refuses to relinquish his control of her. When Clare’s husband retaliates, she is subjected to a harrowing ordeal at the hands of Hawkins’ men.
After the British authorities fail her, she is forced to enlist the help of Aboriginal tracker, Billy (Baykali Ganambarr) to guide her through the rugged Tasmanian wilderness in search of Hawkins on a mission of revenge.
With the notorious Black War raging in the background, they have to learn to trust each other whilst confronting their personal prejudice and trauma to discover the true price of violence and retribution.
Winner of the special jury prize at the 2018 Venice Film Festival, The Nightingale is an uncompromising thriller and a deeply emotional exploration of personal displacement from one of the most important directors working in cinema today.
