During a summer already bursting with brilliant music-filled flicks, we now bring you what is argued to be the concert film to rule them all; with Johnathan Demme and Talking Heads – Stop Making Sense.
This amazing concert was shot over four nights at Hollywood’s Pantages Theater in 1983, as Talking Heads were touring to promote their new album Speaking in Tongues. Featuring all the big hits, a groovy stage show, and the iconic image of David Byrne dancing about in a suit that gradually increases in size as the concert progresses.
“Jonathan’s skill was to see the show almost as a theatrical ensemble piece, in which the characters and their quirks would be introduced to the audience, and you’d get to know the band as people, each with their distinct personalities. They became your friends, in a sense.” said David Byrne in a eulogy, posted after Demme’s death in 2017.
Demme captured what it was like to be there. And even if you were ten thousand miles from Los Angeles in 1983, you could imagine being down the front, dancing like a lunatic.
The overwhelming impression throughout Stop Making Sense is of enormous energy, of life being lived at a joyous high. Don’t miss it.
