Fred Flarsky (Seth Rogen) is an idiosyncratic journalist, with a penchant for brightly-coloured anoraks and a self-destructive streak. Charlotte Field (Charlize Theron) is US Secretary of State – a powerhouse diplomat with a talent for almost everything.
After running into Fred by chance, Charlotte impulsively employs him as her speech writer, unaware that he has harboured feelings for her since his youth.
A fish out of water on Charlotte’s elite team, Fred is unprepared for her glamourous and high stakes lifestyle. However, sparks fly as their unmistakable chemistry leads to a round-the-world romance that becomes embroiled in a series of dangerous and outlandish incidents.
Rogen and Theron are joined by O’Shea Jackson Jr (Straight Outta Compton) as Fred’s best friend, and Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul) as the old-fashioned and sexist President Chambers. Andy Serkis, Alexander Skarsgård and Lisa Kudrow bolster this fun and quirky cast.
In one of the most welcome surprises of the cinematic year, Jonathan Levine’s enjoyable film shows that unorthodox pairings can pay off and that there is still life in the romantic comedy.
