In Amanda Kramer’s bitingly modern twist on William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, a birthday party quickly dissolves into chaos when a mysterious natural disaster traps eight teenage girls alone in a house.
Ladyworld is a bold and intense psychological thriller, featuring an incredible young female ensemble cast including Maya Hawke (Stranger Things, Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood), Annalise Basso (Captain Fantastic), Ariela Barer (Atypical), Ryan Simpkins (A Single Man), Odessa Adlon (Nashville), Tatsumi Romano (Sk8r Grrl), Zora Casebere (Critical Thinking) and Atheena Frizzell (The Old Man & The Gun).
Kramer choreographs action through striking tableaus that follow the group’s shifting dynamics and the haunting score; built from percussion and a chorus of girlish hoots, build the tension. What at first seems a predictable story becomes surprising, lively with the energy of fresh talent and a prickly modern style.
Tasking its eight-strong cast with overtly performing a part in their fractious new underground realm, each representing a different aspect commonly ascribed to femininity. Ladyworld manages to capture the perfect balance between the moments of tension and uneasiness with moments of teenage life.
