“You don’t know what you’re into down here in Alabama — you’re guilty from the moment you’re born.” Based on the real-life memoir of the same name, Just Mercy sees Michael B. Jordan taking on a deeply racist system, and Jamie Foxx as an innocent man sentenced to die.

Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival, Just Mercy is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who joins Brie Larson again after work on Short Term 12 and The Glass Castle.

Jordan, meanwhile, portrays the real-life lawyer and social activist Bryan Stevenson, who sets up the Equal Justice Initiative with Larson’s character. Jamie Foxx is Walter McMillian, the subject of Stevenson’s Just Mercy book. Foxx plays the part with a huge weariness, believing the deeply prejudiced system will not allow him to walk away alive.

Fresh out of Harvard University, Bryan Stevenson decides to work in Alabama to defend innocent inmates on death row, and those who cannot afford representation. He meets McMillian, who has been convicted of murdering an 18-year-old girl, despite evidence proving the contrary.

Stevenson must battle racism and a powerful system as he fights to save McMillian’s life.
