Believed by many to be the greatest footballer to ever grace the field – and almost certainly the most controversial. The story of Diego Maradona is one of cheating, drugs, and mobsters, now expertly told in this gobsmacking documentary by the filmmaker behind Amy and Senna.
As with the celebrated Amy Winehouse film, Asif Kapadia pieces together hours of unseen footage, including the Argentine’s upbringing amongst the poverty of his shantytown upbringing in Buenos Aires, to becoming the breadwinner for his family as a professional footballer. Kapadia places the main focus of the film on Maradona’s time in Naples, where he became a hero of religious proportions.
Transforming Napoli from a derided team to one that could take on the world, life in the dangerous city also saw his cocaine troubles reach a peak, and rumours that he was involved with the Mafia.
Kapadia juxtaposes footage of his public spats with graceful examples of Maradona effortlessly outwitting and outmanoeuvring six or seven opponents at a time.
A Hero, villain, liar, cheat, champion, and a scoundrel – this hugely entertaining biography reveals Maradona to be all these things and more.
