Luton might not be a place you’d immediately link with the New Jersey-born rockstar Bruce Springsteen. But the marvellous Blinded By The Light shows us why the Bedfordshire town has that Streets of Philadelphia spirit.

Directed by Gurinder Chadha (Bend It Like Beckham), the script is based on Greetings from Bury Park: Race, Religion and Rock N’ Roll by Sarfraz Manzoor. Taking place amidst the racial and economic turmoil of the Thatcherite 80s, Blinded By The Light sees newcomer Viveik Kalra in the starring role, with Hayley Atwell and Rob Brydon in supporting roles.

Javed (Kalra) is a teenager who writes poetry as a means of escapism from the racism he faces in daily life, and from the hardline traditionalism of his Pakistani father. When a classmate introduces him to the music of Springsteen, the parallels he sees in the singer’s lyrics with his own working class life gives him a new lease of life and source of inspiration for his writing — much to the behest of his family.
