One of America’s most beloved Christmas films, Bob Clark’s merciless but loving comedy about the defeats of childhood arrives at the Odyssey.

In a pre-WWII small town, nine-year-old Ralphie only wants one thing for Christmas –“ a Red Ryder Carbine Action 200-shot Range Model air rifle”- and fixates on it above all else, though even Santa insists he’ll “shoot his eye out”. This hope, and several elaborate fantasies, sustain him through all the massive trials of everyday life, from his parents’ battles over a stocking-clad trophy lamp, to the tyranny of bullies and “at least 785” neighbouring dogs, to the multitudinous embarrassments of his family. Through humourist Jean Shepherd’s memories, Clark avoids sentimental piety, instead elevating every mundane, hilarious incident into a triumph of childhood endurance and imagination, which should resonate far beyond baby-boomer America.
