This devastating study of a marriage coming apart during a holiday in Italy is the best known of the films Roberto Rossellini made with his wife Ingrid Bergman.

Katherine and Alexander Joyce (Ingrid Bergman and George Sanders) are an English couple holidaying in Naples whose marriage starts to fracture under the strains of mutual boredom and resentment.

As they wait to find a buyer for the house Alex has inherited from an uncle, their unusual surroundings bring out unexpected strains in their marriage. Alex rails against his forced inactivity while Katherine goes off alone on excursions around the sights.

The striking looseness of Rossellini’s storytelling suggests the subjective textures of life, encompassing periods of dead time that anticipate the modernist art films of Michelangelo Antonioni. The breakthrough was barely recognised at the time.

The film will be introduced by Dr Paul Sutton, who will stay for the end of the film for a post-screening discussion in the front-tier of the downstairs seating area.
