Carey Mulligan, Ralph Fiennes, Lily James and Johnny Flynn star in this adaptation of John Preston’s historical novel, which reimagines the events of the 1930’s excavation of Sutton Hoo in Suffolk.

Just before WWII reached the UK, wealthy widow Edith Pretty (Mulligan) hires an amateur archaeologist Basil Brown (Fiennes) to excavate the burial mounds on her estate. When they make a historic discovery - the remains of a 7th century Saxon burial ship on land near Woodbridge. The echoes of Britain's past resonate in the face of its uncertain future‎.

Due to the looming war, the British Museum can’t spare the resources at first, but eventually they get involved once it’s clear the estate has a whole host of historic discoveries to be made - including swords, shields, bowls and cutlery. Arguably the most iconic discovery at Sutton Hoo, the helmet, has become a symbol of the Anglo-Saxon period.

Australian filmmaker Simon Stone was recruited to direct the picture and with a screenplay from decorated English dramatist Moira Buffini, the scribe behind Cary Fukunaga’s Jane Eyre (2011).
