Stéphane (Damien Bonnard), only just arrived from Cherbourg, joins the Anti-Crime Squad in Montfermeil, in the suburbs of Paris, where Victor Hugo set his famed novel Les Misérables.

Alongside his new colleagues Chris (Alexis Manenti) and Gwada (Djebril Zonga) - both experienced members of the team - he quickly discovers tensions running high between local gangs. When the trio finds themselves overrun during the course of an arrest, a drone captures the encounter, threatening to expose the reality of everyday life.

Debut feature director Ladj Ly took inspiration from his 2017 short film of the same name and the 2005 Paris riots, creating a politically-charged urban western - the most incendiary crime film to emerge from French cinema since Mathieu Kassovitz’s La Haine.

Ly’s film is best when it immerses us in small moments and naturalistic performances, propelled by Pink Noise's electronic score.

Please note this is a new French drama film which is not connected with the musical of the same name.
