Agnieszka Holland's thriller, set on the eve of WWII, sees Hitler's rise to power and Stalin's Soviet propaganda machine pushing their "Utopia" to the Western world.

Meanwhile, an ambitious young Welsh journalist, Gareth Jones (James Norton) travels to Moscow to

uncover the truth behind the propaganda. Instead, he’s fobbed off by legendary newspaper editor

Walter Duranty (Peter Sarsgaard).

Equally intense is Vanessa Kirby (young Princess Margaret in The Crown) as journalist Ada Brooks.

Jones goes on a life-or-death journey to uncover the truth behind the façade that would later inspire

George Orwell's seminal book Animal Farm.

There’s a sense that Andrea Chalupa’s script has been painstakingly researched, weaving strikingly

provocative elements from history into a darkly intriguing dramatic thriller. Meanwhile, Holland

keeps everything in shadows, as gifted cinematographer Tomasz Naumiuk makes each set look

elegantly underlit, before further draining colour in the harrowing bleached-snow Ukrainian scenes.

A fiery epic paying further tribute to this forgotten figure of history, and stoking the coals of

remembrance as the forces of authoritarianism are, as they say, back in the news. Those with a

passion for the truth will be gripped.
