Australia in the 1870s: as the spoils of the gold rush roll-on, wealthy travellers through the bush are ambushed and robbed by gangs of fearsome ‘bushrangers’. Chief among them was a young man and his band of loyal followers – the infamous Ned Kelly, whose robberies and raids made him a nation-wide legend. In the dying days of the Australian frontier, it was the Kelly Gang that raged against modernity.

But this is far from your standard outlaw movie. With George MacKay (1917) following in the footsteps of Heath Ledger and Mick Jagger in playing the legendary criminal.

Director Justin Kurzel (Macbeth, Snowtown) pries into the moments that shaped Kelly – his time as an accomplice to the grizzled bushranger Harry Power (Russell Crowe), his family’s brushes with British colonial authority, and his strange relationship with the villainously-charming Constable Fitzpatrick (Nicholas Hoult). Kelly is determined to write his own heroic life story… but ultimately, all is not quite as he tells it.

Boasting an impressive cast, beautiful cinematography and pulsing punk energy throughout, Kurzel’s latest is a brutal and fresh retelling of the Kelly legend that’s sure to stay with you long after the credits roll.
