In 2011, amidst competition from Little Mix and Lou Monte’s ‘Dominick the Donkey’, an unexpected contender took the coveted Christmas number one: a poem of letters sent between soldiers and their loved ones, sung by a choir of servicemen’s wives and partners.

Taking inspiration from their rise to fame, Peter Cattaneo (The Full Monty) brings a story of quiet endurance and liberation to cinemas, showing how a simple escape from military life could capture the hearts of millions.

Kristin Scott Thomas (Darkest Hour) and Sharon Horgan (Catastrophe) star as the uptight Kate and the laid-back Lisa, two dramatically-different women both living in fear for their husbands and sons in Afghanistan. The two’s attitudes inevitably clash after forming a choir for their fellow wives and partners, but will they be able to put their disagreements aside when the invitation of a lifetime arrives: a chance to perform at the Royal Albert Hall.

Though familiar to most, Cattaneo’s take on the Military Wives’ Choir story has a touching blend of humour, tears and soul-stirring achievement. Fans of Calendar Girls and Kinky Boots will especially not want to miss this wonderful tale of finding joy amidst incredible hardship.
