Mark Rylance lifts a classic sports story of British determination (if not success).

After many undistinguished years as a Lancashire crane operator, retiree Maurice Flitcroft found a vocation in golf and went straight to the British Open, only to be turned away for his poor amateur handicap. Undeterred, he simply entered as a self-declared professional against future legend Seve Ballesteros, earning both the tournament’s worst-ever score and a lifetime ban. Loved, hated, mocked, and revered all at once, he continued to enter through numerous flimsy disguises, always given away by his unfailing grin. Written by Horrible Histories and Paddington mainstay Simon Farnaby, the film raises a mundane farce of a true story into a triumph of persistence, self-deprecation, and sheer love of the game, all incarnated by Mark Rylance in typically compelling, totally convincing fashion.
