With his brother absent from filmmaking for the time being, Joel Coen soldiers on in a striking new version of Shakespeare’s play.

Receiving the King of medieval Scotland at his castle, an accomplished lord and soldier is pushed by his wife and three witches to murder for the throne - but the act has more corrosive consequences than anyone realises. Considering the story’s colossal fame and notoriety, and the variety and imagination of previous versions, Coen makes Shakespeare’s shortest tragedy new yet again by intensifying everything: shadowy sound stages in black-and-white, with little period decoration or theatrical grandstanding, give it a stark, uncanny force. This approach does not prevent a distinguished cast, led by a ravaged Denzel Washington, from seizing attention, keeping danger and mystery in what could easily be staid or overfamiliar.
