Before Portrait of a Lady on Fire, there was Girlhood.

The third film from writer-director Céline Sciamma. Set in the projects of Paris, this film makes palpable the liberating potential of girl power - and shows us the social pressures that aim to extinguish it.

Marieme/Vic, (played by Karidja Touré - winning Most Promising Actress at the 2015 César Awards) is 16, failing school and left mostly abandoned at home. She is approached by members of a girl gang on her block to join them on a trip into the city centre.

Sciamma presents us with a coming of age story that develops ideas of belonging, sisterhood and what it means to be a teenager. She brings the face of black youth to the forefront of international cinema and invites the audience to witness the bond these girls share.

This film is for those who: love coming of age cinema, are fans of Sciamma’s work (ahead of her latest film Petite Maman out at the end of the year), who may have missed it on its first release, and for anyone wanting to revisit this electrifying portrait on the big screen.

A rarely-seen female-centric lens of modern life in Paris.

The Odyssey Cinema and Open House Film Club welcome you to this very special curation collaboration. OHFC will introduce the film and bars will stay open after for post-film catch-up.
