From director John Schlesinger (scripted by Keith Waterhouse from his own novel) and featuring Tom Courtenay in one of his greatest performances, we bring you Billy Liar - one of the great movies of the 1960s.

William Fisher (Courtenay) lives in Yorkshire with his parents and grandmother. To escape the boredom of his humdrum existence, he constantly daydreams and fantasises, often picturing himself as the ruler and military hero of an imaginary country called Ambrosia.

Discontented in his role as an undertakers’ clerk, overseen by the rigid Mr. Shadrack (Leonard Rossiter in top comedic form), he spins lie after lie as he juggles three girlfriends (Helen Fraser, Gwendolyn Watts, and Julie Christie).

Billy aspires to get a more interesting job but will this lazy and emotionally immature man summon the guts to leave it all behind?

The young Tom Courtenay balances zestiness and frustration, levity and rage, and never soft-pedals his character’s more unsympathetic tendencies.
