Yardie is the directorial debut from actor, James Bond candidate and occasional DJ, Idris Elba.
Based on the cult novel by Victor Headley, Idris Elba’s directorial debut fuses the hard-boiled gangster genre with a coming-of-age period piece. And with a cracking cast, top-draw reggae and dancehall soundtrack, and Elba’s name attached, Yardie expertly captures the spirit of the times.
The story begins in Kingston, where we find a young Dennis Campbell, portrayed by Aml Ameen (Kidulthood, The Maze Runner). He is hugely affected by the murder of his brother, which leads to him being sent to London to deliver a package of cocaine to British gangster Rico (Stephen Graham, the go-to for gangster roles). The situation becomes complicated when he visits his former lover Mona (Naomi Ackie, Lady Macbeth) who is raising their daughter as a single mother. And even further when he discovers his brother’s killer is also in England.
Yardie was screened at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, and is a hugely exciting prospect that you need to see for yourself.
