Part of the ‘A Cinematic Odyssey: Postcards from Europe’ strand.

This second feature by Sicilian writer-director team Grassadonia and Piazza returns to the Mafia theme of their first, inspired by the 1993 kidnapping of a 12-year-old boy whose mafioso father broke omertà to become an informant.

Recalling Gabriele Salvatores’ Oscar nominated adaptation, Io non ho paura / I’m not Scared, which traverses similar Mafia abduction terrain, this film shares its childhood perspective on events and amplifies its fantastical elements to produce an overtly genre-bending experience, merging gothic psycho-drama, teen romance and political thriller.

Early in the film the relationship between school friends Luna (Julia Jedlikowska) and Giuseppe (Gaetano Fernandez), blossoms into romance but shortly after Giuseppe is absent from school, to the apparent disinterest of the adults, it becomes evident that he has been kidnapped. Luna attempts to organise a search, again with little adult engagement. As something of a daydreamer, she turns to her subconscious and to the world of dreams to seek out Giuseppe, as the film juxtaposes fairy-tale and myth with the harsh reality of Mafia criminality.

Luca Bigazzi’s masterful cinematography negotiates this landscape to powerful effect, plunging the viewer into the visceral depths of a film that becomes ever darker as it progresses towards its denoument.

The film will be introduced by Dr Paul Sutton, who will stay for the end of the film for a post-screening discussion in the front-tier of the downstairs seating area.
