Eleven years have passed since Ian McEwan adapted his hugely popular novel Atonement, which introduced audiences to an incredibly talented thirteen year old named, Saoirse Ronan.

Now, in the adaptation of his bestselling 2007 novel, On Chesil Beach, Saoirse plays Florence, who during the Summer of 1962 marries Edward (Billy Howle). The film jumps around in time, taking us through their idyllic courtship, where we start to fall in love with them as a couple. They’re entrancingly specific people, and what surprises us is how alike they are, in spirit and temperament, and also how different their upbringings have been. She is a talented and ambitious classical musician from a well-to-do family, and he is a clever young historian from humbler origins whose mother suffered a horrific life changing accident.

The film is a directorial debut for Dominic Cooke, best known for his stage work and as the artistic director of the Royal Court, however it feels like he’s been doing this for years, fashioning the material into a visually captivating romantic puzzle that reverberates with hope and tenderness and wistful loss.
