In the mid-nineties, Britain was becoming cool again. Trainspotting was an international success, Brit Pop dominated the charts and ‘Golden Balls’ Beckham was bending something apparently. But, in the world of Haute Couture, there was only one name on everyone’s lips:

Alexander McQueen.

McQueen looked like a skin-head, spoke like an East-End barrow boy and had only one O-Level to his name. However, his unstoppable drive to create inspired clothing designs of danger and sensuality lead him to rise rapidly through the couture echelons, becoming chief designer at Givenchy in 1996.

He was called an enfant terrible and the hooligan of English Fashion, causing controversy and admiration in equal measure with sell-out collections with names such as ‘Jack the Ripper Stalks His Victims’, ‘Dante’ and ‘Asylum’. He counted Kate Moss, Nicole Kidman and Sarah Jessica Parker amongst his celebrity patrons.

McQueen, committed suicide on the eve of his beloved mother’s funeral.

His death came as final preparations were being made for an autumn collection to be unveiled in Paris.

In this poignant and affecting documentary Ian Bonhote and Peter Ettedgui explore the demons that lead to the loss of such a shining light of British Fashion.
