If there’s one thing Summer 2018 needs, it’s a dystopian neo-noir crime film (try saying that five times quickly). And we’ve got one in the enticing package that is Hotel Artemis.

The ‘hotel’ is in fact a secret hospital in futuristic 2028 Los Angeles. We find LA in desperate, darker times: companies are privatising water for its citizens; who are rioting. As more and more people are branded criminals, the need for Hotel Artemis is without question.

Jodie Foster plays the nurse who runs the place, alongside the orderly Everest. He’s played by Dave Bautista, who continues to win at the tricky task of transitioning from professional wrestler to actor.

Among the hospital’s colourful patients are Acapulco (Charlie Day, progressing from It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia), an obnoxious arms dealer. And Nice (Sofia Boutella), a deadly assassin.

When the city’s most notorious crime boss shows up (Jeff Goldblum), and with the riots ever approaching the Hotel, tension is at breaking point.

First time director Drew Pearce’s first offering is a real treat.

Just remember the hospital’s golden rule: guests are not to kill other guests.
