John Carpenter’s seminal horror film is rightly considered to be one of the finest in cinematic history, often imitated but never bettered.
The film can be viewed as a cautionary morality tale as well as a masterclass in suburban terror.
Jamie Lee Curtis stars as Laurie Strode, a teenage babysitter who is about to have the worst night of her life when she and her friends are terrorised by the escaped lunatic Michael Myers (aka The Shape). Co-starring screen veteran Donald Pleasence in excellent form and hot pursuit as Myers’ psychiatrist Dr Samuel Loomis.
Carpenter eked every cent out of his $300,000 budget to deliver a taught, suspenseful film full of jump scares and grisly deaths. It was filmed in full 2.35 scope to allow lots of spaces for the killer to silently emerge from, and the eerie Steadicam gives an almost dreamlike otherworldliness to the shots. John Carpenter’s soundtrack is also a masterwork, a ticking synth score that leaves you feeling anxious before the film’s even begun.
Don’t miss your chance to see this bona fide classic on the big screen.
It’s Halloween after all…and everyone is entitled to one good scare!
