In a welcome contrast to the current glut of CGI-rich mayhem comes a realistic never-too-late adventure, with its director Simon Hunter nominated for an Audience Award at 2017’s Edinburgh Film Festival.

Released from a tedious marriage to a domineering husband, Edie (Sheila Hancock) fends off her daughter’s efforts to confine her to a nursing home by determining to walk one of Scotland’s most demanding treks Mt. Suilvan and so, teamed with a pre-“Dunkirk” Kevin Guthrie as walk-mate Johnny, she sets out on her multi-faceted journey.

Hancock may be unfairly thought of as “only” a small-screen actress but her portrayal of stoic humour in the face of emotional and physical duress shows why she’s been in constant demand in both film and TV for over 50 years; she links effortlessly with Guthrie in engaging the audience, never allowing the film to slip into self-indulgent saccharine and cliché.

In addition, wonderful cinematography and tracking shots combine with an expressive soundtrack to display the beauty and sheer majesty of the Scottish countryside.

No stunning surprises perhaps but a positive life-affirming story excellently – and beautifully – depicted.
