"Relive the magical pairing of James Stewart and Kim Novak (Vertigo, 1958) in this rarely screened Golden Age classic, Bell, Book and Candle (1958) is the perfect alternative Christmas movie – complete with witches, warlocks, beatniks and bongos!
Adapted from the hit stage play by John Van Druten, this Technicolor romantic comedy is set in late 50s Greenwich Village across a long Christmas and New Year. Gillian (Novak) is a bored young witch who longs to fall in love, she sets her sights on her publishing executive neighbour Shep Henderson (Stewart) and stops at nothing, save a few well-placed spells, to get him.
Featuring a stellar cast including Jack Lemmon and Elsa Lanchester, Bell, Book and Candle is full to the brim with witches brew, snow-blanketed New York streets and boozy jazz clubs evocative of the burgeoning Beat Generation. Reminiscent of the TV sitcom classic, Bewitched by Sol Saks, Gillian enlists the help of her meddling family and her Familiar, the entrancing cat Pyewacket, in her struggle to balance her love for Shep with her life as a witch.
This screening will include a short introduction on alternative Christmas films by Dr Darren Elliott-Smith (University of Hertfordshire).
